SYNOPSIS
In Budapest slang, hyenas are freelance taxi drivers that overcharge and cheat you. In this comedy filled drama, a trio of such hyenas are making ends meet at the expense of naive passengers that need a ride to the city from the airport. Their leader, Gáborbá is a well respected but grumpy old man who can not let go of things. Zsolt is an overconfident wannabe alpha male who just took out a massive loan on a new car for taxi. Krisztián is a youngster still living with his oppressive mom, desperately trying to become a man in the shadow of his late father, an ex-cabby.
After years of doing business in the gray zone, their time is up when their presence at the airport is overruled by Gáborbá’s old friend and former colleague, Endre, who offers them to either join his taxi company and become legal or to find themselves back on the streets of Budapest, hunting for prey at night. Out of sheer pride, Gáborbá and his crew chose the latter. Things get even more complicated when Zsolt breaks a leg following a fight with a customer and his wife, Edit has to take over his place in the taxi.
Krisztián finally leaves his oppressive mother to live in his cab while handicapped Zsolt is forced to stay at home and care for his son living his terrible-two. However, rubbing customers blind is not Edit’s thing but she is even more terrified of failing and letting her husband down. With the help of surprisingly attentive Krisztián, she learns to cheat and to put herself first. She starts enjoying that and the young man’s attention too. Edit and Krisztián turn attentiveness into romance and a sexual relationship enfolds unbeknownst to Zsolt who is just learning to become a father. Meanwhile Gáborbá figures out a smart way to “legally” sneak back to the airport and restart business there. Endre will not tolerate Gáborbá and his crew back at the airport and a cold war starts.

Following his short film, Földiek (Earthly People), which had received critical acclaim, winning the Best Live-Action Short Film at the 5th Friss Hús Budapest International Short Film Festival and earning a nomination for the Student Academy Award in 2017, Ádám is now working on his debut feature film Hyenas.
“I wanted my first film to tell a story with complex, intricate characters who go through significant arcs. It will be a dialogue-heavy, actor- and character-centered film, with a strong emphasis on performance.”
